BECOME A REFEREE

Becoming a referee is a great way to extend your knowledge of the sport and to open up new avenues for progression in Judo away in addition to competition.

Whatever your competition experience as a player, the Judo mat looks a very different place when you’re the referee in charge!

Junior Referees

There are three levels of Junior Referee that a junior player can hope to attain:

  • Level 1: Can officiate in school or club events in contests involving players of 6th Mon and below.
  • Level 2: Can referee at Area Closed Mini Mon events involving players of 6th Mon or below.
  • Level 3: Can referee in all Junior Area events .

In addition, Junior referees can officiate in selected grading contests.

At each level of Junior referee there are minimum age and grade requirements.

Senior Referees

There are various levels of senior referee awards:

  • Area: Can referee at Area gradings and competitions up to BJA ’2 Star’ level;
  • National ‘C’: Can referee at all Area gradings and competitions up to BJA ’3 Star’ level;
  • National ‘B’: Can referee at all events up to BJA ’4 Star’ level, excluding finals;
  • National ‘A’: Can referee at all events up to BJA ’4 Star’ level, including finals.

At each level there is a minimum grading requirement ranging from 3rd Kyu to 1st Kyu. Candidates must pass both theoretical and practical examinations.

To successfully achieve a junior refereeing award, the candidate must pass both a theory and a practical test.
